(WAAC spends 23c per person on direct help to PLWHA????)
First there was the PRIDE Festival now it is World AIDS DAY and WAAC/HAPAN are again AWOL. This PRIDE, in spite of the fact that Gay Men make up the largest group effected by HIV, WAAC/HAPAN did nothing for HIV+ people and now on WORLD AIDS Day there are no events planned on the day. Last Year WAAC/HAPAN paid $400 to repair the AIDS Memorial but this year it will stand unused. A forgotten monument to a forgotten War?
What does this say about the kind of community we live in? What does this say about the groups and organisations in Perth who continue to support AIDS Organisations who do nothing for positive people? WAAC/HAPAN are funded by Government to prevent HIV transmissions and support HIV+ people and those affected by HIV. On this most basic of measure AIDS Organisations in Western Australia are failing. Infection rates have increased approx 42% SINCE 2003.
Did WAAC spend more on catering per week for VIPS than on condoms to prevent HIV/AIDS?
This year, during PRIDE, WAAC staff unlike HAPAN were visible all over the place and in the paper as one would expect from a highly funded peak body who is also the major advertiser within the small local gay media. It is one thing to have your pic in the paper but in real terms this continued failure to organise events for positive people serves to undermine the integrity and authenticity of PEAK BODY STATUS. What's the point of being a peak body if you give nothing back to the community in the way of events/functions for poz people? Positive People and those affected by HIV have been forgotten this year by WAAC/HAPAN. When it comes to the implementation of their not publicly available 'Business Plans' it is clear that WAAC is keeping an eye on the ball. There will, of course, be a 'community awareness strategy' which is really a fund raiser for WAAC as evidenced by the requests for tin shakers!
It is time for the community to really start to question the unquestioned levels of support given to AIDS organisations in this State. HIV+ positive people and those affected by HIV/AIDS deserve better than to be ignored on World AIDS Day. People dropping money into WAAC tins have the right to ask where's our money going to end up? On a brighter note, the Catholic Living Centre will be holding a church service on 30 Nov and the usual Friday Lunch at Pastoral Care will be a BBQ! Too bad if you are not a Catholic or you support GLBTIQ human rights: There's nothing on for you! WAAC staff are saving their celebrations for the Parmelia Hilton launch of the history book which many poz people haven't been invited to!!!
Clearly the AIDS Gravy Train is alive and thriving but the BOARDS of WAAC/HAPAN do need to answer 'Why have you done nothing for poz people on World AIDS Day and does this match with the 'blue print promises' given to the community and signed off on in the State Government's public AIDS Action Plan?

The Bell of Tolliday, because it’s not enough to be seen, we need to be heard too. We ring the bell to cast out the demons of stigmatic guilt, the guilt we feel for being ourselves, homophobia and discrimination, and to remind the members of the gathered faithful that the AIDS crisis is not over. The dominant Judeo-Christian paradigm stigmatizes people who fuck and love the same gender. We’re fighting back, claiming the right to live our lives free of the burden of other people’s guilt.
The
OPI GSL are part of an international queer heretic organisation, a group
of motivated people tackling the injustices and inequities of queer life.
OPI GSL promotes the interests of all members of the GLBTIQ community. We
support the rights of everyone to spirituality, well-being, and full legal
participation in the wider community.
As
our regular viewers will have noticed, we’ve moved our electronic presence
offshore, with a (lovely) new website and email
addresses that match quite nicely too. As you can hear, our Bell of
Tolliday has also been in an expansionist mood and it's not so easy to creep
away into the back office for a quick sneak peak at the news and views on
our site!
